World Famous Florida Dune House Sold!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleWhen renowned architect William Morgan gazed across the lot next door to his Atlantic beach home, he knew he wanted to build something but at the same time didn’t want to obstruct his lovely view of the sand dunes or feel crowded by a neighboring house being so close to his own. So he decided to do what most people would consider the unthinkable, by building under the dunes instead of on top of them. Needless to say, his artistry in designing and building the two, 2-story apartments with dune roofs, became known internationally in no time. Strange as it may seem, though praised worldwide, most local residents still remain uninformed. At least there aren’t a steady stream of gawkers!
When it came time to consider putting the Dune home on the market, it was a hard decision. After contending with the unimaginative who wanted to tear it down and build a generic mega mansion, finally a perfect match was made in the form of William Drew and his friend, Jennie Malloy of Coconut Grove in Miami. Drew is a fan of modernist architecture and feels honored to have met William Morgan. He grew up in Jacksonville and remembers the Dune house from his boyhood while surfing from the beach. Drew is now a financial executive who will be using it as a vacation home.
The apartments are entered from the street, down a common stair to the upper floor, which houses the entry, bedroom and bath. Descending a stair that follows the outer wall curve to the main lower floor, the living, dining and kitchen open to the east to a covered terrace at beach level, facing the ocean. The building was constructed using swimming pool technology, a gunite-concrete shell anchored to a cast concrete floor, the whole covered with a mantle of earth stabilized by native landscaping which helps maintain a 70-degree interior temperature. The interiors are made mostly of wood with extensive built-in furniture, giving the home a feeling similar to a stateroom aboard a ship.
