On so many occasions the Filberg House has been touted as "the most beautiful house in Canada." World-renowned architect, Arthur Erickson, designed this home for his long time friend, Rob Filberg. Their relationship started long before Erickson became an architect when they were both in school, but they became very close while spending large amounts of time together evaluating the property for the final design. Filberg, a native of Comox, situated on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, was so enthralled with the natural beauty there he wanted to build a retreat and gathering place for "international thinkers" that would be a place of great inspiration. This was one of Erickson’s first design projects and one for which he will be ever remembered.

Designed in 1958 on a 25 acre piece of land, the house sits on a 200’ seaside bluff overlooking water and mountains with glass walls providing spectacular views overlooking Hornby and Denman islands. Sadly, young Filberg, age 33 at the time, never got to see his masterpiece completed. In 1960, just months before the house was finished, Rob committed suicide. He had suffered from alcoholism and depression and was then additionally distraught over the scandal of the breakup of his one-week marriage to a local socialite. It was because of his depression that Erickson designed the home to be filled with natural light in all seasons. The house sat empty until it was purchased in 1962 by a doctor of Inuit heritage who removed the glass walls, cedar lattices and other main architectural features and closed it up with pink stucco walls and tiny windows. Condemnation followed over his desecration of the home to the point that he left. A neighbor, Doug Field, purchased the property and restored it to the original plan.
