New York Stone Victorian Mansion!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleAmericans are known for their ingenuity and every generation produces notable examples. In this case, when this stunning Victorian was built overlooking the postcard town of Little Falls, New York and the meandering Mohawk River, but lack of access to electricity presented quite a challenge to the mansion’s original owner.
David H. Burrell was an industrial engineer, credited with advancing the Little Falls cheese industry by standardising the product in size and uniform consistency, resulting in increased sales. In 1889 he built his mansion, Overlook, designed for him by prominent New York architect, Archimedes Russell.
Burrell wanted electricity for his home but it had not yet reached Little Falls. As an accomplished engineer and inventor, Burrell designed his own power system from a mountainside water source to a water wheel generator. While similar systems were lucky to power one ceiling light bulb per room, Burrell’s generator supplied enough electricity for the entire 15,000 square foot home including large chandeliers. The original generator is still there today, and with some reworking, can be made to operate once again. A good idea for any home buyer fed up with today’s high cost of electricity or for emergency backup.
The main house, placed on the Historic Register, is referred to as High Victorian style due to the eclectic era in which it was built, which tended to mix styles. With Overlook, Russell picked the most elaborate examples. On approximately 15 acres, the mansion has exquisite details such as multiple fireplaces, practically one for every room including the entry foyer - none of which are alike. There are also multiple formal parlors and family recreation areas. Period details are all in place such as elegant oak millwork, Tiffany-style stained glass and detailed parquet floors. The mansion was recently restored and operated as a five star bed & breakfast and event center. For more information.
