In 1982, a relatively unknown Frank Gehry had recently completed the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, California and he was featured in a New York Times article as one of America's brightest young architects. The Times article was seen by Mike and Penny Winton who later commissioned Gehry to design a guest house for their family home (family home was designed by Philip Johnson in 1952) in Orono, Minnesota.

Composed of various colors and textures of rectangles, triangles and squares surrounding a pyramid-shaped living room, it was an early preview of some of Gehry's later award-winning buildings such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Guggenheim Museum in Spain and the University of Cincinnati's Vontz Center.

In 2007, the Winton home was donated and moved in eight sections 110 miles to the University of St Thomas branch campus in Owatonna, Minnesota, used by the school as a faculty conference and academic center. In 2014, the Owatonna campus was sold to Meridian Behavioral Health with the agreement that the new owner would maintain the Winton House while the school searched for a new owner.

On May 19th, the guest house will be going to auction with the stipulation that the home be preserved and moved again to a new location.

The home was completed in 1987 at 2,300 square feet of metal, stone and plywood and features a curved bedroom finished in Minnesota limestone, a galvanized-steel loft, the 35-foot pyramid-shaped living room and a rectangular second bedroom both finished in black-painted metal. It won awards from House and Garden, Time, Los Angeles American Institute of Architects and the National American Institute of Architects.

Now living in Los Angeles at age 86, Gehry is a professor at his alma mater, the University of Southern California, and has won a number of awards including the Pritzker Architecture Award. In 2010, he was described as "the most important architect of our age" by Vanity Fair and his Guggenheim Museum was chosen as the most important architectural design in the world since 1980.
