According to the recorded history of Jacksonville, Florida, in 1858, Doctor Thomas F. Perley purchased a large parcel of land on a bluff overlooking the St. Johns River atop Empire Point. He proceeded to build his home that displayed views across a mile of river to the far shore. Three years after its completion, the Civil War erupted and Doctor Perley was inducted into the medical corp of the Confederate Army as a colonel. When the war was over in 1865 he returned to his home but in 1868 sold it to a prominent Jacksonville banker. The house later burned down and all that was left was the huge brick vaulted wine cellar connected to the main house by a tunnel which had been dug into the bluff and the 90-pound granite corner stone of the house above. It is one of Jacksonville’s rare antebellum structures that still survives.

In 1993, another family bought the property and, taking their lead from the antique brick and wine cellar, they brought in two trailer loads of architectural pieces from New Orleans and 22,000 antique bricks to rebuild as authentically as possible. The rebuild took over 2,000 hours of on-site millwork which included custom-made transoms above eight first-floor doors, five-layer crown-and-floor molding and custom routered door and window surrounds. Multiple antiquing trips provided refinished claw foot bathtubs and other period decor. The home took fourteen months to complete.
