Viñoly was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1944 to a film and theatre director father and a mathematician mother, so it’s not surprising that he chose the two influences for his own career. Demonstrating both architectural and business talent beyond his years, Viñoly formed his own architectural firm four years before attending the University of Buenos Aires and obtaining his degree in architecture. By the time he received his Master of Architecture from the School of Architecture and Urbanism in 1969, his firm was well on its way to becoming one of the largest architectural practices in South America. In 1978, he moved his young family to the United States where he served as a guest lecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and the next year settled in New York City and opened his firm, Rafael Viñoly Architects, in 1983. His contemporary flair for design can be seen in many of his award-winning buildings in the United States, South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. When Rafael Viñoly accepted the commission to build the private estate residence Arbor Hill, the owners benefitted from the the boy-genius of architecture’s full career experience.
