$88 Million Penthouse!
$88 Million Penthouse!
In an attempt to downsize to a smaller apartment on the 6th floor of the same building, Sandy Weill and his wife, Joan, have placed their 6,744st penthouse on the market for a record-breaking $88m. The penthouse, which takes up an entire city block on the Central Park side of 15 Central Park West, took two years to build out and, quips Weill, ". . . three years to find the right matched onyx!" Though few interior pictures have been published, Architectural Digest did do an article describing the building and decorating process; one that would leave most people in a frazzled heap. After purchasing the shell in 2007 for $43.7m, with 2 years of construction and decorating to deem it move-in ready, it's conceivable that he could have spent quite a few million above the purchase price. We now hear he has a buyer, at what price we will probably never know. Weill does insist that he'll be donating the proceeds to charity.
So what does a NY city block-sized apartment have? A nice place to start would be the 2,077sf terrace and from there we have a specially designed oval master suite positioned to catch the sunrise over Central Park. Overall there are 10 rooms including 4 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, library, kitchen with a view, and 2 wood burning fireplaces. The fireplace measurements were dictated by Weill, who wanted to use large logs from a country property he also owns.
In review, we have a city block-sized penthouse priced at $88m with only 10 rooms and not one bidet. Some think it's a foreigner who placed the offer. If the sale goes through, bidets are sure to follow! NY Post reports sale of Citigroup CEO penthouse. CEO paid $43.7 million in 2007.
