Mansion of the Week!
Mansion of the Week!
In suburban Philadelphia on the old Main Line linking the wealthy enclaves of the past, this glorious Tudor mansion, Glenmede, is being offered for public sale for the first time in 100 years! The estate was originally built for George S. Graham, a congressman who had the connections to engage the best architect of the day, William Price, and the most important muralist, William Van Ingen, to build and decorate this magnificent structure. Today, the murals, stained glass and much of the hardware by Van Ingen is considered to be historically and artistically priceless. Sited on 15 acres, the compound also has a pool house, gardener's cottage, carriage house and gate house. In 1904, the house passed to the Pew family (Sun Oil Company - Sunoco) and has stayed in that family until they bequeathed it to Bryn Mawr College in the 90's.
Within the 12,000sf main house there are 8 bedrooms, 8 full baths and 2 partial baths. Throughout the mansion, in addition to the murals and stained glass, the main staircase is notable as well as the step down living room with its 7' wainscoting. We took special note of the inglenook fireplace in the billiard room/office and were flabbergasted by the massive andirons. Both formal and family rooms contain details of skilled craftsmanship using exceptional materials. The house sits on a hill making the property very private. Landscaping consists of mature specimen trees and rolling green lawn.
Built in the late 1800's in Bryn Mawr. $15,500,000
