Retired developer and entrepreneur, Howard French, hasn’t been the first person who retires but can’t stop working. Even though he has homes in Florida, California, Ohio and another one in Atlanta, he just can’t resist if he sees a building that needs his touch. People with a passion for houses always want to try something different. In this case, French had never lived in a loft, and this old building in the National Register of Historic Places in Forest Hills was perfect for such a Howard French project.

The antique building had been built on stilt-like structures, which in the South would let the air flow under the building to cool it in the years before air conditioning; now known as crawl spaces, where any workman is likely to meet up with the local wildlife while fixing a plumbing leak. The first thing French did was strip out the house, finish the basement and build the outdoor walled-in terrace and infinity-edged salt water pool, well hidden from the street. Now there was basement space for a gym and wine cellar. He went on to finish the interior with large open spaces, minimalist in design, with high end materials. He referred to it as Miami Modern.

French lived in the home enjoying its quiet ambiance and hosted many parties there, some for as many as 300 people. The pool terrace was a great venue for entertaining as well with the extensive outdoor kitchen he installed. It had everything: grill, beverage center, dishwasher and yes, air conditioning.

When Howard French decided he wanted to build a loft, he built a Loft! But then he got tired of it. He created it, he lived in it, he enjoyed it, but then he was ready to move on. It’s the way some people get when they’re antsy for a new and different project. So he put it on the market at $8.9 million.
