Gordy’s special ability, in addition to songwriting and producing records, was in identifying unique talent and promoting his artists and stars. After establishing Motown Record in 1959, Gordy signed the Temptations, Supremes, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5.
Born and raised in Detroit, Gordy purchased the mansion in 1967 and owned it until 2002. After watching so many celebrities come and go from the home over the years, a neighbor bought it from Gordy and set about a detailed restoration that was recognized by the state for its historical significance.
The 10,500-square-foot Italian Renaissance Revival mansion on over two acres has five bedrooms, nine baths, chef’s kitchen with granite countertops, sunroom, formal rooms, four fireplaces and large spaces for entertaining. There is an Olympic-sized swimming pool and 4,400-square-foot pool house that was added in the 1920s with a bowling alley, billiards room and gymnasium.
Mr. Motown, Berry Gordy’s former Detroit mansion, completely restored, is now the second highest priced estate home in Detroit. Priced at $1.295 million.
