Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleJoe Walter, Jr. was a man who liked to take educated risks and hated the idea of spending his life behind a desk. Armed with a petroleum engineering bachelors degree in 1949 and a masters in geology in 1951, Walter took the proceeds from the sale of his deceased father’s company and started his own wildcatting business in 1951, Houston Oil & Minerals, and started drilling along the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana. In 1981, he sold the company to Tenneco, had a heart transplant, waited a couple of years to heal and started over with Walter Oil & Gas. Having passed away in 1997, the business passed to his children with the family being listed in Forbes’ 2015 America’s Richest Families at #139 with a worth of $1.8 billion.
In 2002, Joe and his wife, Elizabeth, purchased the 780-acre Table Rock Ranch in Colorado located between Vail and Steamboat Springs. At the time it was rather rustic with a few older ranch buildings and mediocre fishing streams. Over the course of the next six years they completed significant improvements to the infrastructure, stream and ponds. Subsequently they engaged architects, builders and interior decorators to design and craft a suite of new buildings for the ranch.
Several houses on the property surround the roughly 3,400-square-foot main lodge, which has no bedrooms and serves as a gathering place for residents and visitors. The lodge, with cathedral ceilings, has a living room and dining area with a stone fireplace, a family room with a pool table and shuffleboard, kitchen, office and two bathrooms. The lodge is flanked by two 1,500-square-foot houses, each with two bedrooms, a kitchen and covered porches. Another two bedroom home measures about 765 square feet. Due to its setting behind mountain ridges, the ranch experiences milder winter temperatures which draws wildlife to overwinter in its shelter.
Perfect for the sportsman, Colorado’s Table Rock Ranch is home to great fly fishing, hunting, birding and near some of the state’s best ski slopes. The ranch can be used for gathering family and friends as well as a vacation venue as a sportsman's retreat. Priced at $18.5 million.
