Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleFans of architecture are well familiar with the works of John Lautner. He created many of Southern California’s most famous homes including Chemosphere House that was called "the most modern home built in the world" by Encyclopædia Britannica when it was built in 1960. He was the architect of choice for Bob and Dolores Hope to create their Palm Springs "Volcano" house, and a number of Lautner’s houses have been designated as historic landmarks. Many have also been the sets for films and television such as "Diamonds Are Forever," "The Outer Limits," "Body Double," and "Charlie’s Angels."
Lautner’s 1968 Stevens’ House veered away from his usual avant garde spaceship-style designs to emulate a crashing ocean wave. At 3,366 square feet with five bedrooms and five baths, it is situated on 37 feet of sandy beach with a large beachside deck. An unusual feature is the large indoor swimming pool with retractable glass walls that runs full length along the main living area. Natural elements are seen throughout using driftwood colored wood for ceilings and walls. Added to the atmosphere is the beehive shaped mantel over the living room’s wood burning fireplace. Having undergone an extensive restoration and updating for today’s expectations, the home has earned the status of a California State Cultural Landmark.
John Lautner’s iconic Malibu beach house, Stevens’ House, now priced at $22 million.
