Mackinac Island Estate!
Mackinac Island Estate!
Restoring a home isn't for the faint-hearted, but imagine restoring an 8,000sf mansion on an island where motor vehicles are banned! Can you imagine your materials coming by boat then transported to the location via horse drawn wagon? Though the first small and simple cottage was built by Constance Fenimore Woolson in the mid 19th century, the original burned to the ground in 1873. Constance was the grand niece of James Fenimore Cooper and penned a very popular novel of her own during those years, entitled "Anne". Therefore, the name Anne Cottage was bestowed upon the property when it was rebuilt in 1899 by the next owners of the property.
Today, this classic cottage, as they tend to call Mackinac mansions, consists of 32 rooms and a stable with full living quarters that was added later. But the view is the grand focal point. This exquisite Victorian-era cottage overlooks the yacht and ferry harbor from almost all windows including the 14 windows of the master suite. The house has 7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms and even has a billiards room and 2 dining rooms! There are 4 fireplaces, including one in the master suite. We saw one with a surround of imported Italian marble that looks rare. The woodwork is amazing and some of the antiques go with the sale.
Love boating? So do we! Though we tend toward sailing, you may not mind engine noise and could opt for power. Whatever your preferences, here is another of the best ways to usher in the warmth of summer on the water. What a deal for only $3.4m! A summer escape in Michigan.
