Mel’s Old Mill Farm Back On Market!
Mel's Old Mill Farm Back On Market!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleMel Gibson has made a few mistakes and episodes of bad taste in recent years, but there’s no denying that Mel has always had good taste in real estate. So good in fact, that one almost can’t wait to see the interior and grounds of whatever he puts up for sale. We’ve drooled over Lavender Hill Farm, the Costa Rica jungle farm on the beach, Beartooth Ranch in Montana and the Fijian island of Mago among others. When it comes to land and houses, Mel doesn’t do anything stupid.
The 75-acre Old Mill Farm in Connecticut is one more example of Mel’s ability to know the best real estate when he sees it. Mel bought the property in 1994 for $9.3 million when he was married to his now ex-wife Robyn. They sold it to Cosette Property LLC for $24 million in 2010. Cosette put it on the market over a year ago for $33 million. Last August Tom Cruise was considering buying it in order to be closer to his daughter Suri, but he probably realized how he would rattle around in this huge place alone when she was back with her mother and gave up the idea.
It’s interesting that we can see Mel’s touches in the landscaping. Mel has a penchant for human sized outdoor chess boards and the one at Old Mill Farm is exactly like the one at Lavender Hill Farm. He also is a fan of fruit orchards and lush gardens as is evidenced in most of his other properties. This farm has the orchard with both a formal maze and other formal garden installations befitting the Medieval architecture and a garden right out of a Monet painting, befitting the soul. The large pool area is even lovelier after walking down the Monet path under the proverbial rose covered arches to gain access. In addition, the grounds contain wide lawns, a tennis court with stone building, a greenhouse, horse stables, staff houses, log cabin and stream-fed pond, all surrounded by woods for the ultimate privacy.
The 15,800 square foot main house has been renovated and restored in tune with its Elizabethan inspired theme. The great hall has a 40-foot half-timbered vaulted ceiling, massive walk-in fireplace and huge leaded glass windows. Half-timbered ceilings continue throughout the house as does 17th century English paneling. There are 15 bedrooms, 17 bathrooms and grand spaces both indoors and out for entertaining.
