Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleSo successful as a composer, lyricist, actor, singer, director, novelist, painter, that his nickname was The Master, Noël Coward’s body of work spanned 60 years from before World War I through the 1970s with his inimitable and unique persona and British style. Many of his plays were shocking for the more reserved Englishmen, but were well received in America and by the 1950s were well received in England - once the country began to relax and recover from wartime strife. Many of his classic works such as Hay Fever, Private Lives, Present Laughter and Blithe Spirit are considered classics and are still produced today. Over his lifetime he composed hundreds of songs, musical plays, poetry and short stories while maintaining a successful stage and film acting career.
During the time Coward spent working on Broadway in New York City, he lived at his financial manager, John C. Wilson’s home in Fairfield, Connecticut. The two entertained many stars here including Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier and George Brent. Now owned by Dwight and Martha Gesswein of the jewelry company Gesswein, Coward’s U.S. East Coast retreat is on the market. Designed by Anglophile Francis Hamilton, the English Georgian Revival home was built in 1926 on Sasco Hill with views over Long Island Sound and Southport Harbor. Hamilton brought in craftsmen from Norway to create and install Norwegian pine paneling, wood moldings, hand-carved wood garlands and marble fireplace surrounds. On almost three acres, the 5,089-square-foot home has seven ensuite bedrooms, three half baths, formal rooms, new eat-in kitchen, library/media room and lower floor billiard/game room with walk-in wine closet. Beautifully landscaped grounds include a pool and pool house with dressing room, bath and wet bar. Priced at $7.75 million.
