Stephenson designed the home for General Electric with input from the Reagans, he probably never realized that his open California style would be just as appealing in 2013 as it was in 1957. Though Stephenson died in 2007 at the age of 95, he would have been happy to know that there was an apparent bidding war over his graciously designed home. Stephenson designed homes for a number of Hollywood's leading figures of the 1950s, including director King Vidor; actress Laraine Day; dancer Cyd Charisse and her singer husband, Tony Martin; and singer Jo Stafford and her arranger/composer husband, Paul Weston.
As a reward for the many television successes Ronald Reagan had on behalf of General Electric sponsored shows, they built this house for him as a General Electric home of the future showhouse, all-electric with every imaginable electrical convenience, including the newly conceived garbage disposal, sequential whole house lighting, and an outdoor phone box that would hold up to 200 phone lines! In addition, the dining room would turn into a projection room by sliding a painting to one side, and as Nancy Reagan said during an interview with Architectural Digest back then, "I can't tell you how many refrigerators, ovens and fancy lights GE gave us."
The 4,764 square foot, 4 bedroom, 4 bath ranch has panoramic views extending from the Getty Center to the ocean from all the main rooms. The mid-century modern ranch has huge, glass-walled rooms, vaulted ceilings, den with wet bar, octagonal swimming pool and great open spaces for entertaining. It captures the indoor-outdoor living style that is the spirit of California.
This was the home where on November 4, 1980, Ronald Reagan received the call from President Jimmy Carter conceding the election and to congratulate him on his landslide victory in becoming the 40th President of the United States.
