Tyler Florence
Tyler Florence
With three TV shows under his belt, six cookbooks, a chain of kitchen shops and three restaurants, is it any wonder that Tyler Florence is a mainstay in the celebrity chefs category? His clean-cut, boy-next-door image belies the fact that the man can throw together a classic New York style cheesecake in under six minutes while teaching food technique at the same time! Hard to believe this young man has already spent 14 years at Food Network with shows that got our attention from Food 911 to How to Boil Water and now Tyler's Ultimate. Born in South Carolina where he acquired his culinary degree from Johnson & Wales University, Tyler went on to make his name in New York working under the tutelage of premier chefs in restaurants such as Aureole and Mad 61, and went on to become executive chef at Cafeteria. Having previously fallen in love with northern California, he decided to forego a Big Apple career and move to the San Francisco bedroom community of Mill Valley. Ensconced in a natural wilderness, and known as an enclave for the wealthy, the town is a wonderland of upscale shops, parks, art festivals and the Mill Valley Film Festival.
Tyler, his wife, Tolan and their three children own a 1926 Craftsman bungalow which they have remodeled into a sanctuary, and which Tyler refers to as their "sweet little cabin in the woods." The view from his kitchen window tells the story. Small but appearing quite spacious, the home consists of 2,000 square feet of living space. Surrounded by second growth giant redwoods, the Pacific to the west and San Francisco just four miles away on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, it is a perfect setting to raise a family.
With his busy schedule, Mill Valley seems to be the answer for getting away from it all. In addition to his regular show, he also hosts many other Food Network shows and is a regular guest on The Today Show, CNN, The View, Oprah, Good Morning America and numerous others. To add one more stick to the fire, in 2009, he launched a signature line of steel-clad cookware and titanium cutlery to the Home Shopping Network and at major retailers. With all his business activity in California, the personal appearances and filming his TV shows in New York, the view of redwood trees from his kitchen window at home must always be in the back of his mind.
