Hemingway’s Childhood Home!
Hemingway's Childhood Home!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleThe life and writing of Ernest Hemingway has always captured our imaginations and our hearts. Whenever we’re in Key West, we still love to walk through his home and grounds hoping to see a 3-toed cat and must have a drink at Sloppy Joe’s to sit and contemplate what it must have been like for Hemingway back in the early 30’s. But did we ever think much about how he started out; about the environment that was the beginning of his inspiration to write and explore life? For the first time we now have that opportunity because his Oak Park, Chicago childhood home is for sale. We get to look inside this marvelous house and a whole new insight to his formative years begins to emerge.
This stately Prairie-style home was built in 1906 in the new suburb on the western edge of Chicago. It was during the time that Frank Lloyd Wright was designing, building and living in Oak Park where he built about 30 homes and other structures and lived there himself until 1909. Ernest’s father was a doctor and his mother a musician, so this home provided a two-room medical office as well as a music studio. Surrounded as he was by highly educated parents who appreciated the arts, this house was where he returned after World War I and realized that, due to his life changing war experiences, no longer fit into the unchanged routine life of the community. His short story, A Soldier’s Home, was based here.
Currently divided by floors into 3 separate apartments, the house begs for a new owner to restore it back to its former glory of a 4,200sf, 6 bedroom gracious residence. Having been beautifully maintained through the years, a redo should be a simple process offering large family living and entertaining spaces with the huge front porch we all crave today. The neighborhood is valued for its attractive mix of architecture so hard to find in today’s cookie cutter developments, and the town is known for its unique shopping and restaurants.
